Episode 4 – Backcountry Breakfast

30 November 2009 in Food and Snacks

Whether you’re packing into the Grand Canyon, or setting out on an expedition to find Bigfoot, you might need to eat breakfast. Ben and Josh try out a few freeze-dried breakfasts and offer up some advice. Caution: Some of this is not pretty.

Words to live by as spoken in this episode of Camping Gear TV:

  • “Is this food made from llamas?” – Ben
  • “It looks kinda like the stuff that goes on top of rye bread pizzas.  Also a little bit like dog puke.  It does not smell good either. ” – Josh
  • “There was a hint of disgusting.” – Josh

All of this stuff can be bought at REI and costs about $4 or $5.  As far as freeze-dried breakfast goes, a couple of these are actually not too bad.   Mountain House eggs were pretty good.  Backpacker’s Pantry huevos rancheros was pretty terrible.  And the pancakes by Natural High, although they didn’t get us high, were pretty decent.

Good reviews — I always wonder how those different things taste, and you really can't get a non-biased review, so you just have to buy them and hope for the best.
I'd like to see more food reviews, maybe a lunch and dinnner.

Right, it's really tough to know if something will be god awful or not.
Better to watch our shows than to end up in the wilderness eating a pile of
    yuck!

Lunch and dinner reviews…you got it.
