How to Make a Sleeping Bag, Featuring Exxel Outdoors – Episode 153

14 February 2011 in Miscellaneous, Sleeping Bags

Ben and Josh venture to America’s only remaining major sleeping bag factory, in Haleyville, Alabama to see just how a sleeping bag is made.  So much goes into making these popular sleeping bags.  From the beginning stages of raw material processing, to the final packaging and shipping, you’ll notice tremendous efficiency and skill in the workers at Exxel Outdoors. During our visit to their plant, we quickly noticed how much pride they take in the products produced, and after watching this we’re sure you will too!

As always, stay right here at CGTV for more info on backpacking and camping gear reviews!

Thanks Tiff. Yeah, it’s fun to do this kind of stuff in addition to the
regular format. Hopefully we’ll have some more soon!

Definitely man. Appreciate the kind words. Hopefully next time they’ll let
    me keep the bike.

I’d like more info on the sizes and temperature range of their bags. I’m in the market for a new sleeping bag since my previous was stolen. I’d really prefer to buy an American made product. It is a shame more products Americans buy aren’t made in America. Anyway thanks for an unexpected and interesting video. I didn’t know the sleeping bags at Wally World where these. I seem to remember another brand name listed. Thanks again guys.

You can see a discussion on the Ozark Trail bags seen here in our WalMart
series. They also produce a sleeping bag called American Trails that is
    very nice for camping.

    Yeah, pretty cool huh?

Kind of reminded me of the old Mr. Rogers videos when I was a kid.  That lady sewing on the zipper was fast.  Excellent video guys!

  • http://www.CampingGearTV.com Josh Turner

Ha, never thought about that! Glad you liked it, and thanks for the kind
    words.

Sad that Exxel Outdoors is the only remaining major sleeping bag factory left in the U.S.

Know of any smaller sleeping bag factories in the U.S.?

The following is my opinion, but I think it’s pretty close to factual:
Industry is what makes a nation strong. Outsourcing cripples local economies.

  • http://www.CampingGearTV.com Josh Turner

Yes, there are a couple small manufacturers in the US. Western
Mountaineering, Feathered Friends, and maybe another.

I agree with the Mr. Rodgers look alike. Did I hear that right 7,000 bags a day? Now that’s moving right along. Now with ozark trail brand do those compress very well? I have one I bought maybe 5 years ago that just does not get small in any way. I use it for camping in my pop up camper but I am looking for a reasonably priced sleeping bag for hiking. meaning compresses to a smaller size and doesn’t outweigh the titanic.

These are more for family car camping than backcountry trips. For backpacking, check out some of the slumberjack bags. Very reasonably priced, and great quality.
